Rosalie Stetson

A mild orange tint colored the atmosphere. Rosalie blinked until her focus sharpened. She heard a low guttural sound and gasped. Had he come back to finish the job?

“Rosalie?”

She pinned her back against a cushiony headboard and focused on the man sitting left of the foot of her bed. “Chance?”

“How do you feel?” he asked.

Rosalie looked around the room. The fancy wall mirror in the decorative iron frame that faced the four-poster bed, the garden-green walls, and the refinished antique armoire all looked familiar. They were in the carriage house. Her gaze settled on Chance, who looked at her as if she were some delicate thing that might break. “How long have I been asleep?” she asked.

He looked at his watch. “A little over thirteen hours. You were in shock.”

Rosalie grunted, remembering how wound up she was after the attack. When she came down, it hit her hard. But now she was remembering how she got to the carriage house.

“You carried me over,” she said.

“Yeah.” Chance’s voice was gentle.

Rosalie was so sleepy earlier, but goodness, she wished she had remembered how it felt to be in his arms.

Chance put the pages on the table beside the armchair and leaned forward. He looked so timid, so careful. “Security suggested that we lodge here. They’ve made it safe for us, so you don’t have to be afraid.”

A yawn escaped Rosalie. She squeezed her eyes so tightly the pressure was able to relieve her slight headache. “We have security?” she asked with a sigh.

“Yes, I hired a very thorough security detail. Fred suggested the company. So far they’ve been earning their hefty price tag,” he said.

Rosalie’s head was loopy, so she rubbed her temples. She had a lot more questions for Chance, but at the moment, all she could focus on was recovering her strength.

“Cook made dinner. How about you eat something?” Chance asked.

All of a sudden she felt burdened by the proverbial ticking time bomb. Rosalie forced her eyes wide open. She had slept a day away and wasted time that they didn’t have to spare. “So what else?” she asked.

“What else?”

“You hired security. What else did you do?”

“How about we discuss it over dinner? You really need to eat. Get some sustenance in you. I promise, I’ll fill you in on everything.”

Rosalie stared at his handsome and worried face. Part of her wanted to resist, but she had no idea why. Her growling stomach made the decision for her, especially since she realized she hadn’t eaten all day. “Okay, I need sustenance.” She sighed. “So I’ll eat something.”

Chance watched Rosalie with a slight smile as she carefully swung her legs over the side of the bed. Her feet thumped as they dropped to the floor. Every limb of her body felt heavy, and when she stood, her head was woozy.

Chance rushed over to steady her. “Can you make it?”

His breath warmed her cheek. She was once again reminded of yesterday morning’s kiss. Rosalie inhaled sharply. “I can,” she said breathlessly.

Chance carefully let go of her but made sure they walked side by side down the hallway.
